Research
Project I. Deposition of alkylmagnesium reagents onto porous silicas bearing a known amount of accessible hydroxyl groups results in alkylmagnesium-modified supports for which the grafting stoichiometry can be deduced. TiCl4 and/or VOCl3 are attached to these ‘passivated’ silica surfaces by non-protolytic grafting, to yield the immediate precursors of certain Ziegler-Natta catalysts. The nature of the transition metal sites (nuclearity, oxidation state, ligand complement) has been studied using a combination of elemental analysis, XPS, EPR, XAS, and analysis of volatile organic products.
